A Turkish political ally of Cameron says woman mustn’t laugh in public

One of the most senior members of the Turkish government sparked an outcry on Tuesday, after declaring that women should not laugh loudly in public.

The deputy prime minister, Bülent Arinc, one of the co-founders of the ruling Islamic-rooted Justice and Development (AK) Party said:

"A man should be moral but women should be moral as well, they should know what is decent and what is not decent"

"She should not laugh loudly in front of all the world and should preserve her decency at all times," Arinc said in a speech on Monday, in the western Bursa region for the Bayram holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

Responding Nigel Farage, UKIP leader and spokesman on Foreign Affairs said:

“Enough with the jokes. We are obviously into the silly season when a key political ally of David Cameron says woman should not laugh in public.

They say the problem with political jokes it that they often get elected and this has proven to be the case here.

David Cameron is the founder of the alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists (aECR), a pan-European Political party and the Turkish AK Party joined in November 2013.

They say politics makes odd bedfellows but this is ridiculous.

In welcoming the Islamic AK Party of Turkey into the pan-European political party along with his Conservative Party, Cameron is showing his true colours. The Turkish ruling party has a terrible track record on human rights abuses and is very extreme.

Fork-tongued David Cameron talks about restricting immigration to the UK while supporting EU enlargement as far as the Ural Mountains, to include countries such as Turkey - a poor and populous country which is getting more radicalised by the day. Oh yes, and it also has 30,000 armed troops occupying the north of Cyprus.

While the female MEPs and spokeswomen of UKIP on there on merit alone, this Turkish minister shows that his party, just like the Tory Party obviously has a problem with women.

It was ill-considered and despicable to go into a political alliance with the Turkish AK Party. Will he now distance himself from the AK party and eject them from the aECR? “
