Douglas Carswell, 43, is married to Clementine, and has a young daughter and a dog! He had a proper job in business before politics. He is a keen gardener, likes running and swimming - and loves making his own jam.
Douglas was first elected to Parliament in 2005 by a slender 920 votes. He was returned as MP for Clacton in 2010 with a 12,000 majority.
In 2014 he joined UKIP from the Conservative Party because he realised the Conservatives aren't serious about real change, saying that “Only UKIP can shake up the cozy little clique called Westminster”.
As someone who has always answered directly to independent-minded Essex folk he sought permission for his move from his boss, the people of Claction, and so resigned from Parliament triggering a by-election where he is on course to be UKIP’s first elected MP.
Douglas says: “I'm asking the voters of Essex to help me bring change. Let's do this together. Let's see if we can make history.”
He blogs regularly and is keeping a campaign diary of the by-election at http://www.talkcarswell.com/
