Council fails to collect £11 million in tax

Thursday, 10th March 2011

Manchester City Council failed to collect almost a tenth of its council tax revenue last year, costing it £11.1million.

It tops a list of the ten worst performers in the country, which are all either Labour-controlled or run by Labour-led coalitions. Across England, the total amount of uncollected council tax is a staggering £1.1billion.

At the same time, Manchester yesterday announced cuts worth £109million, including cutting 2,000 jobs.

Cllr Pete Reeve, UKIP spokesman for local government said: “it is a disgrace. Incompetence in local government is causing services to be cut deeper and increased taxes to those who do pay.”

Last year Manchester collected just 90.9 per cent of the money owed. The national average was 97.1 per cent. Its cuts package includes the closure of all but one of the city’s public toilets, five libraries, three leisure centres and two swimming pools, and slashing funding to youth centres and Sure Start nurseries.
