Rebuffed Marta: 'I'm not going away!'
Tuesday, 21st July 2009
The political Left and Right in Brussels plotted for a cover-up by joining forces to bar former EU Chief Accountan Marta Andreasen a senior role overseeing the Brussels Budget.
Mrs Andreasen, one of UKIP's newly elected MEPs said: "What are they scared of? If they have nothing to hide then they would have supported my candidacy. This underhand and childish reaction just shows us how scared they are of the the truth.
"However I will not be going away. I am still on the the Committee and I intend to use my position to act as a particularly sharp thorn in the the side of the the EU accounts.
It can be no surprise that the accounts are never signed off when they act like this".
Here's how the Daily Telegraph reported the incident.
The stitch-up deal was done last week when the federalist coalition realised that the newly-elected UKIP MEP was about to take the key Vice-President's role on the Budgetary Control Committee.
Going against precedent they organised a blocking majority. Worse still the normal system is that the vote is by show of hands. They changed the rules this time to hold it as a secret ballot.
"What price accountability in the accounts when the MEPs are frightened of revealing that they are frightened," said Mrs Andreasen.
As an example of their behaviour, the leaders of the Socialist and EPP groups went to the bar immediately after the vote and ordered champagne to celebrate their victory over accountability and transparency.
