EU forces in Somalia slammed

Tuesday, 17th November 2009

After EU Foreign Policy chief Javier Solano's announced EU intentions to send troops to Somalia, UKIP called the plans "beyond acceptance".

UKIP Deputy Leader and Foreign Affairs spokesman David Campbell Bannerman said: "Now Lisbon is passed, the EU are pushing forward fast with an EU Army and Armed Forces at a rate of knots - something this Government and David Miliband supports.

"We already have EU Armed Forces, including the Royal Navy, patrolling off Somalia, now they want to grab more powers on the land too.

"This job is better left to international bodies such as NATO or the UN, not to an emerging regional superstate that is just trying to throw its weight around in the world.

"Since the tragic murder of five servicmen only weeks ago in Afghanistan the thought that more British servicmen be put in harms way, but this time on behalf of the European Union is beyond acceptance.

"At this time, with such military overstretch Briatin must oppose these moves".
