UKIP appeals to Supreme Court
Thursday, 4th February 2010
UKIP has won leave to appeal to the Supreme Court over an earlier decision to allow an Electoral Commission forfeit on the Party for accepting donations from a donor whose name was inadvertently left off the electoral role.
This means the Party will now face a full bench of Supreme Court justices to determine whether the Commission’s claim of £363,000 will be allowed to stand or whether an earlier forfeit decided at £18,000 will be levied instead.
The date set for the hearing is June 8th or 9th this year.
UKIP Leader Lord Pearson of Rannoch said: “We’re obviously delighted that the Supreme Court will hear the appeal as we believe we have a very strong case in our favour.
“What this date now means is that UKIP can concentrate its efforts on fighting the General Election and making a real impact.
“After that, it is up to the court to decide.”
