Campaign moves to Thirsk and Malton
Wednesday, 12th May 2010
The main election may be over, but UKIP’s campaign is still full steam ahead, with the focus now moving to North Yorkshire for the Thirsk and Malton by-election.
Following the death of John Boakes, UKIP’s former candidate in the constituency, the original May 6 election was abandoned and a revised polling day was set for May 27.
UKIP’s new candidate is the hugely-experienced Toby Horton, who has previous experience of standing against Tony Blair in Sedgefield and has also been the chairman of William Hague’s constituency Conservative Association.
Mr Horton says he defected to UKIP in 2006 in protest at the way Conservative, Liberal and Labour politicians have continued to hand powers to the European Union.
“When Ted Heath’s government joined the EEC in 1973, its view was the Britain was about to become part of a vibrantly growing bloc and benefit from Germany’s post-war economic miracle,” says Mr Horton.
“Instead, the opposite has happened, the whole project is heading for the rocks and those countries that declined to form part of it, in particular Norway and Switzerland, are counting their blessings.
“As someone who has always hated any form of injustice, I believe a great injustice has been done to the British people by their political masters. They have gratuitously ignored legitimate concerns about immigration, taxpayer-funded vanity projects and loss of national culture.
Mr Horton says his candidacy offers the people of Thirsk and Malton – a new constituency following recent boundary changes – a chance to vote with their hearts and not their heads in the wake of an unsatisfactory general election.
He added: “Chaos at the very heart of our politics has led directly to the chaotic outcome of the general election.”
