Most Germans want out of the Euro
Tuesday, 29th June 2010
The majority of Germans are fed up with the Euro and want their old currency back, according to a poll published today.
UKIP leader Lord Pearson says he fully expected people in Europe’s strongest economy to rebel against the failing single currency when they saw how their hard work was being used to pay for the early retirement of Greek civil servants.
"At last the German people are waking up to the fact that they have been deceived on a massive scale by their own politicians and by the European Union," he said.
"The speed of the change of opinion is remarkable but will be devastating to the political elite, both in Berlin and in Brussels."
The Ipsos survey shows 51% of Germans want the Deutschemark back, with just 30% wanting to keep the Euro, which took over from the national currency in 2002. The remainder was undecided.
