Does my bum look big in this? Beware!
Thursday, 1st July 2010
British husbands should beware, UKIP MEP Mike Nattrass has warned this week, after French MPs unanimously approved a new bill which could see people jailed for being rude to their partners.
In January, the West Midlands MEP urged politicians across the Channel to drop plans to introduce the ludicrous law and expressed concerns that the legislation could be introduced across Europe if the law is seen as a success.
French politicians have backed the new law despite French magistrates claiming the new legislation will clog their courts with cases from couples at loggerheads or warring couples in dispute.
Last December, the self-amending Lisbon Treaty was ratified which expanded the European Union’s law-making powers and also restrict the power of Westminster.
Mr Nattrass says, as the EU makes 75 per cent of our laws, Brussels may attempt to roll out this new French law across Europe, including here in Britain.
He said: “Of course physical and mental abuse should not be tolerated but I cannot see how this law is workable or indeed enforceable.
“French courts will be clogged with squabbling couples. Hypothetically, what happens if a British husband is rude to his wife during a holiday in France and returns home? Will the French authorities issue a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) for his arrest?
“Everyone has the right to be treated with respect but the danger is courtrooms may be inundated by unproven cases.
“What if the interfering EU decides to poke its nose in and impose this law across Europe? Our courts would simply creak under the added weight of matrimonial bickering.
“If your wife asks ‘Does my bottom look big in this?’ never reply ‘yes’ or you could face a court," added Mike.
