Hague ideas will boost Eurocrats
Thursday, 1st July 2010
Key points of Foreign Secretary William Hague's speech on Britain's Foreign Policy in a Networked World have been rebutted by UKIP's Leading Spokesman, Nigel Farage MEP.
"Mr Hague's attempt to be in Europe but not run by Europe are ridiculous," Mr Farage said.
"Increasing our ties to the Eurocracy will not create influence it will merely reduce our wriggle room.
"Time and time again Conservative politicians have told us that they wanted to be at the heart of Europe. They have told us that they want to force the pace of reform.
"All Hague seems to want to do is to reduce his own staffing costs by putting more civil servants on the Eurocrat pay roll.
"The problem is Mr Hague, we pay for them too."
Mr Farage also poured scorn on a number of other points in Hague's speech at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.
"He talks about increasing influence in international fora, but forgets that we have no voice at the World Trade Organisation because of our membership of the EU", said Mr Farage.
"And he talks about encouraging Turkey to join the EU, without once mentioning that that would give 90 million new EU citizens the right to move here."
