Continental police handover 'a disgrace'
Tuesday, 27th July 2010
UKIP have blasted the Government over its handover of power to Continental police.
"It now appears that Continental police forces really do have the ways to make us talk," said Lord Pearson, the UKIP leader today.
"The fact that Teresa May, the Home Secretary is trying to suggest that defending ancient British liberties as being soft on crime is a disgrace.
"What is also disgraceful is that she has committed Britain to join the European Investigation Order without debate. This is a basic threat to our civil liberties. It allows foreign police forces to demand action from British police forces.
"It will grant foreign police the right to carry out the ‘real time’ interception of communications, monitor a person’s bank account, and demand DNA or fingerprints from a person in Britain.
"What is more as this is a draft agreement; we will not see the final thing, and due to the Lisbon Treaty, when the final version comes out it will be voted on under Qualified Majority Voting at the European Council and thus Britain will not be able to block it if it becomes even worse," said Lord Pearson
