Deportation centre inadequate: Batten
Monday, 2nd August 2010
Gerard Batten, London's UKIP MEP today responded to the opening of the new Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre near Heathrow.
"Britain is one of the most densely populated countries in the word. Our population is set to increase by another 25% to around 77 million over the next 20 years or so. This population growth is simply unsustainable and can be shown to be entirely down to immigration and births to migrants.
"While we have millions of unemployed we bring in over 200,000 migrants per annum to do the jobs many of our unemployed will not do for the low wages on offer. We are driving down wages and driving up the cost of housing beyond the reach of many young people. Migrants are attracted by the opportunity to work, albeit for low wages, and our generous benefits system.
"This is all a recipe for disaster. We must have a commitment to end the age of mass immigration and introduce radical controls if we wish to address this problem. Any future immigration should be strictly controlled and limited and only where it can be clearly shown to be in the interests of the British people."
"The Government is boasting about opening this new centre, but it is sticking a plaster over a sucking chest wound," he said.
