Maternity directive blow to entrepreneurs
Thursday, 5th August 2010
"Britain now has two years to introduce a new set of damaging business regulations", said Godfrey Bloom UKIP MEP today.
Bloom a co-ordinator on the European Parliament's Economic Affairs Committee was talking about the introduction of the latest EU Directive on maternity pay, this time directed at entrepreneurs and the self employed or as it calls itself, The Directive on self-employed workers and assisting spouses (Directive 2010/41/EU). The Commission claims that only one in three entrepreneurs and business start ups are by females.
But Mr Bloom countered: "These figures were not true of the UK. Over half these applications for new business registration here are from women.
"We should be encouraging more people regardless of gender to become entrepreneurs. People would find this easier and more attractive of course if taxes were lower and there were fewer regulations. Had Commissioner Viviane Reding considered a career as an entrepreneur not a bureaucrat, she would of course understand this."
Mr Bloom fears that yet again a huge own goal is being scored.
"They claim to want to help women enter the workplace, but this sort of regulation aimed specifically at micro businesses will only hamper the entrepreneurial spirit", said Mr Bloom.
