One in, One out must include EU regulation
Thursday, 5th August 2010
UKIP Leader Lord Pearson has welcomed the idea of Business Secretary Vince Cable's announcement of a One In, One Out scheme for regulations.
"This scheme for regulations has got to be a good idea," said Lord Pearson.
"But what on earth does he propose to do with the avalanche of EU regulations? For this policy to have any real affect it must include EU regulations."
Mr Cable has said: 'By ensuring regulation becomes a last resort, we will create an environment that frees business from the burden of red tape, helping to create the right conditions for recovery and growth in the UK economy.”
But Lord Pearson countered: "When pressed on whether this would include EU regulations his department answered: 'Officials are currently assessing the most effective method for applying the One-in, One-out rule to those European regulations and directives which affect businesses and the third sector in the UK.
"As of yet they give no indication of how they are going to deal with the imposition of fully-formed regulations from Brussels," Lord Pearson said.
"Given that it would be illegal under EU law to abolish EU regulations unilaterally, then I can safely assume is that the assessment is, 'tough, we are going to keep them'?"
