NI councillor 'unsuitable' for office
Monday, 9th August 2010
The independent Republican politician at the centre of a Northern Ireland storm has been branded by his fellow Newry and Mourne councillor, UKIP's Cllr Henry Reilly, as unsuitable for public office.
Cllr Martin Connolly has caused widespread outrage for refusing to condemn Saturday's attempted murder of a Catholic police officer in the fishing Port of Kilkeel.
The female police officer is Cllr Connolly's niece.
Cllr Reilly said: "I cannot think of a more despicable act than placing a bomber underneath this officer's car for simply wanting to serve the community.
"The perpetrators knew she had a young child who travelled in the car with her every morning which indicates the utter contempt that these people have for human life.
"Cllr Connolly's refusal to condemn the incident clearly shows that he is unsuitable for public office. The Coinservative Secretary of State, Owen Patterson, should examine Cllr Connolly's actions and make recommendations on how this type of belligerent hate-mongering can be stopped."
