UKIP's latest author's labour of love

Monday, 6th September 2010

UKIP regional organiser, Dr Fred McGlade, has achieved a long-held ambition with the publication of his first book.

The History of the British Army Film & Photographic Unit 1942 -1946, published this month by Helion, marks the end of a labour of love for Dr McGlade.

He served six years with the Royal Ordnance Corps, travelling all over the world, and long cherished the idea of recording the history of the army's film and photographic unit during the Second World War.

The unit was formed when it was realised that Britain was losing out to the German's propaganda machine and it documented action in all Allied theatres of war, despite suffering a high rate of fatalities.

Dr McGlade (pictured right), who was a history lecturer at Lancaster University before becoming North West Regional Organiser for UKIP, has based his paperback on personal interviews with surviving members of the unit and details from the unit's diaries.

"Three years' research into the war diaries and official records of the unit are a snapshot of time. Their story is just too big to be told completely in these pages," said Dr McGlade, who lives in Caton, near Lancaster.

This is the first book that 57-year-old Dr McGlade has written and it was based on his thesis for his History PhD.

"It's been a real labour of love and I am thrilled that it is finally in print. I see it as a memorial to all those who served in the unit, particularly those who did not live to tell the tale," said Dr McGlade.
