YI numbers boost at conference
Thursday, 9th September 2010
UKIP's Annual Conference in Torquay saw more Young Independence members attend than any other UKIP event in history, YI Chairman Michael Heaver proudly announced today.
"As I said in my Conference speech, the growth of YI is something both both in YI and UKIP at large should be very proud and excited about", said Heaver.
The main stage saw a presentation by Michael Heaver, YI Secretary Harry Aldridge and Jake Ellett, who spoke for the first time on the subject of the European continent and its relationship with the EU. All three were keen to push the agenda of UKIP reaching beyond the issue of the EU and offering a comprehensive raft of domestic policies which would appeal to young voters.
Young Independence also co-held a fringe event with The Freedom Association: "The Freedom's Bright, The Future's Out" which was hosted by Dr. Lee Rotherham. The panel comprised of YI members Tim Aker, John Gill, Michael Heaver and Harry Aldridge.
There was also a south west regional launch fringe event for Young Independence held in Torquay. A packed room listened to a number of brand new YI members speaking for the first time, with UKIP leadership contenders Nigel Farage and David Campbell Bannerman both attending the meeting. Names for the role of south west regional co-ordinator for YI were encouraged to be put forward, with a number of South West-based YI members expressing an interest. The position should be finalised in the next few months.
Speaking on the success of the entire Conference for Young Independence, YI Secretary Harry Aldridge said: "This was a fantastic Conference for YI, with many expressing their delight at the rate that Young Independence is expanding. As we look forward to a slate of leadership contenders setting out their stall, the next Leader should not underestimate the potential for this Party in terms of attracting young people with our messages of common sense, liberty and real change".

Lovely to see the youth taking notice of our Nigel Farage freedom from the federation, oh yes we can manage our lives without EU restriction.

Removing ourselves from the grip of the E.U will not be an easy task. The youth of the nation must have their voices heard as it is their future and their liberty that we all seek to ensure. The UKIP torch of freedom must be passed over effectively to the younger generations as quickly as we can! Great news, and good luck to them.
