PM told: Ignore France on trade deal

Thursday, 16th September 2010

UKIP has slammed French intervention in a potential UK-Pakistan trade deal.

"If David Cameron wants to open up Free Trade with Pakistan to help mitigate the effects of the appalling floods in that country he should just do it" said William Dartmouth, the UKIP trade spokesman today."

"The fact that he cannot without the permission of France simply highlights the powers that the UK has given up to the EU."

Since 1975 all Britain's trade arrangements have been organised by the EU's Trade Commissioner, very often in ways that are contrary to Britain's interests.¨

"Britain should be moving to free trade with everybody, not just for humanitarian reasons but for good economic common sense. But because we have to go through the EU - a bunch of protectionist dinosaurs - we normally cannot", he went on.

"The UK Independence Party strongly believes that the UK should engage with the whole world, and in particular the Anglosphere and our Commonwealth partners in a rules-based Free Trade zone.

"On a personal level I entirely applaud Mr Cameron's initiative, but Britain's continuing membership of the European Union means that his hands are tied. Mr. Cameron should give us the referendum he once promised - together with a recommendation to vote No," said William Dartmouth MEP.
