EU not convinced Euro crisis is over
Monday, 20th December 2010
A jittery Herman van Rompuy has left the door open for crisis meetings should another country fall in the ongoing Eurozone disaster.
The European Council President told the Conference of Presidents meeting on Friday: "There will not be another European Council meeting until February unless there is another crisis."
UKIP MEP Marta Andreasen, an EU Budget committee member, said the comments showed that van Rompuy believed the crisis was far from over.
"It is clear that Van Rompuy himself is not confident that the present stabilisation mechanism in place will work. With the Spanish crisis looming he is right to be very nervous," Ms Andreasen said.
Earlier, Ms Andreasen dismissed PM David Cameron's claim that he had secured an agreement that the special measures used for bailouts under the Lisbon Treaty would not be used this year.
"Cameron is putting it about that he has made a deal that in future Article 122 will not be used as it has been this year as the 'legal' means of bailing people out," she said.
"The point is that having a political agreement is simply worthless.
"Article 122 remains there as part of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU and if the need arises and the EU reckons it can swing the lead, then the lead will be swung.
"It has been used once and if needs be will be used again.
"It remains the law, even though the text is being abused. Cameron's promise is thus as secure as was Blair's promise that when he surrendered part of our rebate there would be a commensurate reformation of the CAP."
Ms Andreasen said the use of Article 122 to rescue sick Euro economies was dishonest.
"It is totally dishonest to use article 122 of the Lisbon Treaty on natural disasters to justify bailouts - something totally illegal under the Maastricht Treaty.," she said.
"These people and Cast Iron Dave will use any dishonest formulation of words to prevent the peoples of Europe from having a say on their plans.
"It really is a case of Alice in Wonderland meets Pinocchio.
"The collapse of the Euro is inevitable and beneficial. These repeated bailouts are not just failures but also a waste of money.
"Greece was supposed to be the bailout to end all bailouts. It is now clear it's just the first of many.
"What countries like Ireland, Greece and Spain need to do is default, take back their own currencies, devalue and export their way out of trouble. Otherwise we are just pouring money into a black hole.
"That Euro-federalists are willing to put millions of people in poverty and unemployment to centralise more power in Brussels tells you all you need to know about these people and their EU project."
Cameron also came under fire from Ms Andreasen for claiming a victory on the EU Budget increase of 2.9%
UKIP MEP Marta Andreasen, an EU Budget committee member - after voting against an increase in the EU budget at Strasbourg said today:
She said: "While we should be pleased that the European Parliament has surrendered its demands for a 6% increase in the budget and settled for 2.9%, what has become clear is that PM David Cameron seriously underestimated the bargaining power that the UK brings to the table and he could have held out for, and earned, a total budget freeze.
"Instead, he fell for the Parliament's bluff and gave them half of what they wanted, when he could have actually given them nothing."
