Osborne carbon retreat a ruse

Monday, 3rd October 2011

UKIP has dismissed Chancellor George Osborne's pledge at the Conservative Party conference not to cut carbon emissions any faster than the UK's European neighbours.

Godfrey Bloom MEP, the UKIP Energy spokesman said, "Mr Osborne is only retreating from his party's previous climate change alarmism because it is now obvious that the public - which has more common sense than he and his colleagues - has no appetite for it".

"He is blaming the previous government for rising energy prices, and the terrible consequences they cause for low-paid working families and elderly. The coalition promised to be 'the greenest government ever', and while the previous government was creating all this 'environmental red tape' Mr Osborne now objects to, the Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats called for more ambitious carbon reduction targets than the Labour government had proposed."

Mr Bloom continued, "Nonetheless, even the existing EU targets will hurt Britain far more than other EU members. Osborne has effectively admitted that the UK government has no say in our energy policy, it is all dictated to us by Brussels.

"As we know only too well, by not controlling our own energy policy we see soaring costs which not only cripple UK business but millions of households too. The only way for us to take control of our own energy policy is to restore self government to the UK and adopt a coherent energy policy in our own interest.

"When you are diving headfirst over the energy cliff, it doesn't really matter if the other lemmings are going the same speed."
