UKIP poll surge in by-election run-up

Saturday, 10th December 2011

With just days to go before the by-election in Feltham & Heston on December 15th, UKIP has been given a massive boost in the polls showing the Party beating the belaguered Lib Dems nationally.

The latest ComRes poll on voting intentions shows that UKIP is now beating the Liberal Democrats in support across the UK for the first time ever.

In response to the question: 'If there was a General Election tomorrow, would you vote Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat or some other Party?' - 8% of those surveyed said UKIP, compared to 7% who backed the Liberal Democrats. The findings come from those surveyed that classed themselves as 'likely to vote'.

It will make worrying reading for Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat Leader, ahead of the Feltham and Heston by-election which is taking place on Thursday.

Nigel Farage, UKIP Leader, said: "It has always been our intention to make UKIP the 'third party' in British politics and these poll results certainly suggest that we are heading in the right direction."

Mr Farage said the news is just the tonic, days before a by-election.

"We've made such fantastic inroads in Feltham & Heston so far in this short campaign, now we need to firm up that support and continue to spread the message," he said.

"After the events in Europe this week, it's clear that the real debate about Britain's continued membership of the EU is still to begin and UKIP's message is central to that, so people are listening.

"We have a great candidate in Andrew Charalambous and a tremendous team co-ordinating the campaign, now we need more feet on the streets to help them."
