Blair 'was ready to surrender Gibraltar'
Tuesday, 24th January 2012
"The revelation that Tony Blair, when British Prime Minister, was happy to surrender the sovereignty of Gibraltar
just to give him bargaining room within the European Union should set alarm bells ringing," says UKIP MEP William Dartmouth.
"The fact is that so long as the UK remains within the Union Gibraltar, as well as the Falklands are at risk. There could come a time when Gibraltar, or the Falklands, could be placed on the negotiating table as bargaining chips. Only a strong UK government, free from all threats, can guarantee the rights of those living as British citizens in Gibraltar.
"Tony Blair apparently had little or no compunction in seeing Gibraltar as little more than a makeweight in a political game. Who is to say that this could not happen again? We could well see a time when a British government, firmly committed to the EU, could need to win allies by offering what is not really theirs to offer.
"In his autobiography Peter Hain is critical of Mr Blair and his position on Gibraltar. It is a pity he did not have those reservations all those years ago when he was all too keen to follow his master's bidding."
