Blast for abstention on tar sands vote

Thursday, 23rd February 2012

UKIP Energy spokesman Godfrey Bloom has condemned the Government for abstaining on a key vote over Canadian tar sands.

The vote, at the European Council, has resulted in no decision being made about whether to allow the import and use of Canadian oil in the European Union.

"Not only does Norman Baker's principled abstention mean that a decision on the subject will be delayed, it is a kick in the teeth to a British ally," said MrBloom.

"It is imperative to the Green agenda that not only must we tax ourselves out of competitiveness and jobs, but also price ourselves out of energy. Canada has high environmental protection standards, but their great crime is to discover a reasonable and efficient way of sourcing more resources.

"Just as they are trying to block shale gas, these environmentalists will stop at nothing to drive us into the Dark Ages, a time when only the rich could afford heat and light."

Mr Bloom said: :They ask, 'It's now time for every EU country to show its hand: do you want a cleaner transport energy future or not?' But that is not their real question, what they mean is do you want an energy future or not.

"Britain must say, unequivocally', Yes'."
