Powell Tory 'spoke the truth'
Monday, 5th November 2007
The resignation of a Tory parliamentary candidate who said Enoch Powell had been right when he made his 1968 "rivers of blood" speech about immigration was "a disappointing decision", said UK Independence Party MEP Mike Nattrass.
"This nation was built on freedom of speech," said Mr Nattrass, West Midlands Member of the European Parliament. "For a prospective politician to be unable to express his true opinions shows the sad decline in British politics.
"Mr Hastilow was only expressing what millions of people in this country think, and which I believe to be true. It is important that this debate on immigration is taken further so we can have an open and honest discussion on this issue.
"Clearly, Mr Cameron's tough talk on immigration is purely rhetoric and not reality."
Mr Hastilow was prospective candidate for the marginal seat of Halesowen and Rowley Regis. He had said that Mr Powellhad been right in saying that uncontrolled immigration would change Britain irrevocably and would lead to serious social tensions.
