Future is nuclear, says UKIP

The UK Independence Party has urged Prime Minister Gordon Brown to stand by his policy of backing nuclear power as the basis of Britain's future energy needs.

The UK Independence Party also wholeheartedly support a policy of cleaner coal fired power stations, backing the proposals for a new station to be built in Kent.

In a policy document on energy and the environment, released ahead of a government announcement in the Commons, UKIP also urges a policy of cleaner coal-fired power stations, supoorting proposals for a new station to be built in Kent.

One of the authors of the policy document is Professor Derek Smith, of Queen Mary's College, London, who worked for many years with the UK Atomic Energy Authority.

Professor Smith said: "It is vital for Britain's future that the decision on nuclear energy is made now."

"Our main sources of energy are largely dependent on unstable areas of the world. If Britain is to function efficiently then our energy policy needs to be in our own hands. We cannot just sit back and hope for a solution from Russia, Iran or the EU. It is imperative that our energy policy is made here in Britain."

"We propose that instead of covering the country in wind turbines, many of which cannot be hooked up to the national grid, our energy should come 50% from nuclear.

"There is no reason why Britain can't be self-supporting for much of her energy needs through nuclear energy and clean coal-fired power stations, which can be fed by reopening some of our deep coal mines."

UKIP also advances policies on tackling water shortage with a new system of linking water pipes with canals to allow an efficient redistribution of water throughout the country.

The party reaffirms its opposition to green taxes, which it claims are just another form of stealth tax.
