Will Mandelson leave the EU behind?
Friday, 3rd October 2008
The unexpected return to government of EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson – who is to be given a seat in the House of Lords – has been greeted with scepticism by UKIP leader Nigel Farage MEP.
"Congratulations to Lord Mandelson," Mr Farage said. "The good news is that with falling house prices and a fat EU pension, he needn't ask the Postmaster General for help with his mortgage this time around.
"Of course, in order to keep getting that EU pension he has to agree not to work against the interests of the EU even while he sits in our own Cabinet."
Mr Mandelson is to become Business Secretary in Gordon Brown's reshuffled "revival" Cabinet.
