Darling's plan to throw our money around
Tuesday, 10th March 2009
Chancellor Alistair Darling's plan to subsidise the rest of the world has been attacked by UKIP leader Nigel Farage.
"A few billion here, hundreds of billions there, pretty soon you're talking about real money," said Mr Farage.
"Alistair Darling is proposing that after we've shelled out the billions to rescue our own banks and industries, we should now offer a blank cheque to the rest of the world.
"He talks of $100 billion for Eastern Europe, of up to $700 billion for the developing countries. It's all very well to run off to an international meeting and make these promises, but where is the money going to come from? From us, the taxpayers, of course – but the problem is that we don't have it any more than Darling does.
"Spraying our money at those who have made their own mistakes is an absurd idea. Our money needs to be spent on us and our problems, not offered willy-nilly to every outstretched palm around the globe".
