Union gets its priorities wrong
Wednesday, 18th March 2009
UKIP leader Nigel Farage MEP has criticised the trade union Unite over its mass demonstration at Chatham in Kent on 19 March in another "British Jobs for British workers" row.
Two power stations are planned for Kent and hundreds of EU workers have been hired. Unite claims that many of the workers from Poland are being paid only £10 an hour instead of the British level of £14 an hour.
However, Unite says it is are not concerned at the hiring of foreign workers but is concentrating on ensuring they are being paid the correct rate.
South East MEP Mr Farage said it was beyond belief that the union was putting its European credentials ahead of its role in helping provide local workers with employment.
"Here we have skilled men from all over Kent and the South East looking for skilled work," Mr Farage said."Yet their own trade union is more concerned about supporting the Labour government and its stance on Europe. Surely it should be devoting all its time and efforts on finding work for its members.
"No wonder so many traditional Labour voters are ready to vote for other parties in the forthcoming Euro elections."
