Unite 'selling out members' says Farage

Thursday, 19th March 2009

UKIP leader Nigel Farage MEP says trades union Unite is selling out its British members as it sides with employers over the hiring of migrant workers at the Isle of Grain Power Station in Kent.

Kent MEP Mr Farage said that a demonstration held by Unite on 19 March was actively deceiving Unite members into believing that the union stood behind them in seeking the employment of more local residents.

However, Unite says it has no objection to the mass hiring of Eastern European workers for employment in the UK and its main concern is to ensure that migrant workers receive higher pay than they are currently receiving.

Mr Farage commented: "I was met with strong hostility by a Unite official at Chatham, which I have to say doesn't surprise me. The reaction from  members was very different, among whom there was distinct support for UKIP's position.

"Unite is not standing up for their members' interests. All they are trying to do is make sure that these migrant workers are paid the same wages as British workers on the project. What members of course want is that they get the jobs.

"Unite simply isn't standing up for British jobs for British workers, what their members want, so the union simply isn't standing up for the rights of their members, nor their desires."
