France leads way on burka
Friday, 16th July 2010
UKIP Lord Pearson has congratulated the French National Assembly for passing a bill to outlaw the Burka.
He said: "The French ban not only makes sense, but also finds legitimacy in the Koran, which only calls for women to "dress modestly" as the late Grand Mufti of Egypt pointed out. Instead it has become the symbol of the more radical forms of Islamism."
The French Parliament voted overwhelmingly to pass the law that will make wearing the head dress punishable by a fine.
Lord Pearson went on: "They are now the second country to have done so after Belgium voted the same way in April. Isn't it about time that the British Government considered similar legislation. After all, all opinion polls suggest that it is what the people of this country want to see".
UKIP is not opposed to the wearing of religious symbols and does not propose the banning of face coverings on the public highway. But does believe that it would be appropriate in national and local government buildings, post offices, hospitals, doctors surgeries, schools,
colleges, universities, libraries etc. This will also apply to all transport systems, their buildings and conveyances.
