Now it really turns nasty
Wednesday, 1st October 2008
The recent trend in Brussels has been to rubbish everything and everyone opposed to their beloved Lisbon Treaty. This week they sank to new depths.
On Monday afternoon the plenary session of the European Parliament began with a clearly staged set piece. The leader of the Green group, Danny Cohn-Bendit, made a statement expressing alarm at stories of Declan Ganley’s funding during the Irish referendum. He asked for an investigation to determine whether US bodies such as the CIA or the Pentagon were funding Mr. Ganley.
President Pöttering replied that Mr. Ganley did indeed need to reveal where his money had come from. Was it a coincidence that those statements were made on the very same day that Ganley was in Germany looking to put together a Eurosceptic list for next June?
The EU establishment is very worried about a second Irish referendum and about the elections next year. The attempt to cast doubt on Ganley is a classic tactic.
LibDem MEP Graham Watson went even further in the Conference of Presidents meetin, saying that we know that in the past US money had backed causes in Ireland and so we should be concerned.
Readers of previous postings will remember that anyone who opposes the treaty is akin to a fascist; now we are possibly even terrorists. All roads lead to the extermination camps unless we accept Lisbon.
They really are desperate!
