Pubs should adapt to change
Wednesday, 28th May 2008
From Fiona Purcell, UKIP Sutton & Cheam SecretaryIt is not just the freedom of the smoker which is at stake but the freedom of the non-smoker. There is a much bigger issue, too – the failure of British businesses/British institutions to adapt to change. The pubs which have survived have expanded their businesses to cater for family meals and have created covered areas outside to cater for smokers. Those pubs which are failing are those who have not changed the direction of their businesses.
Its a great idea to leave the choice up to the individual but there are some matters which need legislation to enable change. As an issue which causes potential financial loss to business, this would appear to be one of them.
Wouldn't it be better now to spend our energies on helping British pubs change with the times and surviving without smoke rather than looking forward to a time when we can go back to the smoke ages?
