Energy and the Environment: UKIP Policy
Thursday, 10th January 2008
UKIP accepts that the world's climate changes but we are the first party to take a sceptical stance on man-made global warming claims. We called for a rational, balanced approach to the climate debate in 2008, before the extensive manipulation of scientific data first became clear. Polls now show a majority of the British people share this scepticism despite protests from the Lib/Lab/Con. UKIP now calls for an immediate halt to unjustified spending on renewable sources that has let to massive energy price hikes and fuel poverty. Scroll to the bottom of the page to download the full
These are the main points
UKIP will appoint a Royal Commission on ‘global warming’ science and economics, under a High Court Judge to examine and cross-examine the science and economics of ‘global warming’. Pending the report of the Royal Commission, UKIP would immediately:
Repeal the Climate Change Act, and close the Climate Change Department
Halt all UK contributions to the IPCC and to the UN Framework Convention
Halt all UK contributions to any EU climate-change policy, including carbon emissions trading
Freeze all state funding for scientific research into ‘global warming’
Repeal such EU directives as the Large Combustion Plant Directive, the Renewables Directive and Bio Fuel Directive
Ban ‘Global Warming’ propaganda in schools.
In relation to energy, UKIP will:
Ensure secure and affordable energy supplies to safeguard our growing economy
Increase nuclear power generation to provide up to 50% of our growing electricity needs within 25 years, and accelerate the planning process through hybrid Acts of Parliament to allow new reactors to replace old reactors on the same sites
Support efficient extraction of indigenous coal for use in cleaner coal-fired electricity generation plants
Reduce the use of imported gas for electricity generation while maintaining it for direct heating
Require any further schemes of large-scale wind generation to be funded by the market, and limit any large-scale wind generation to offshore only
Support technologies and practice which improve energy conservation and efficiency
Encourage the development and use of renewable energy sources other than large-scale wind generators.
In relation to the wider environment, UKIP will:
Investigate implementation of a nation-wide water supply grid based on existing canals and new pipelines
Encourage the reduction of waste, the reuse of materials and proven methods of recycling
Introduce a ‘litter deposit’ on recyclable goods as an incentive to avoid waste
Reduce environmental bureaucracy to a minimum consistent with good practice and international standards while ensuring that necessary legislation is effectively enforced
Limit pressure on the Green Belt from an increasing population by controlling immigration.
Encourage the increasing use electric road vehicles and their necessary infrastructure
Encourage the major electrification of railway lines
Strengthen the UK’s flood and coastal defences by a major programme of public works which will be paid for by saved EU contributions
