'Swift' data sharing agreement is illegal
Wednesday, 7th July 2010
Gerard Batten, UKIP’s justice spokesman, has slammed EU plans to create a vast database of individuals’ financial information which they will then share with the US, supposedly for security reasons.
The so called ‘Swift’ agreement was rewritten when MEPs rejected original proposals in February. The newly drafted agreement is expected to be rubber stamped tomorrow (July 8), with even supportive MEPs admitting that it isn’t perfect
Speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg this week, Mr Batten, MEP for London, said: “You have created an illegal state and now you are making illegal laws,” he said.
Mr Batten confirmed that all UKIP MEPs would vote against the plans. He added: “The confidential and private financial data in question belongs to the individual and not to the European Union or the European parliament. They have no right to share it with the USA or anyone else.”
“However, we all know that the undemocratic and illegitimate EU legislation takes precedent over national democratic law.”
