Peer accuses Cameron of ‘Blair-speak’ and over-enthusiasm for Turkey’s Accession to the EU

Lord Stoddart of Swindon
The Prime Minister’s speech in Turkey (27.7.10) has brought a scathing reaction from the independent Labour Peer and leading EU sceptic Lord Stoddart of Swindon.
Lord Stoddart said: “David Cameron’s remarks finally explode the myth that he is an EU sceptic. His naïve and over-enthusiastic support for Turkey’s membership of the EU confirms that he is simply carrying on where other Prime Minister’s have left off, including throwing insults at those who take a different view. He accuses anyone sceptical about the wisdom of Turkey’s accession to the EU of being motivated by 'protectionism, nationalism or prejudice'. These clichés are typical Blair-speak.
“The reasons for not admitting Turkey into the EU include its huge and increasing population, which would give it a dominant position in what would cease to be an EU and become a Eurasian Union. By the time Turkey is likely to become an EU member, its population will be at least 85 million, each and every one of whom will have the right of access to the already over –crowded UK. Do the British people really want their Prime Minister to approve of that?
“Furthermore, the history, background and culture of Turkey are quite different from those of the EU and would be difficult to accommodate. If Turkey is admitted there will be pressure for other Asian countries to join, so it seems there will be no limit to EU expansion.
“This is a wake-up call to all those who oppose the spread of EU dominance and in particular for leading Tories to rein in this maverick Prime Minister.”
