In a hard hitting speech during a debate in the European Parliament on ‘farm input and food supply chains’ (19.1.12), Stuart Agnew MEP, farmer and UKIP spokesman on agriculture paid tribute to the success of the present plant breeding system in the UK and bluntly stated that he did “not see the necessity to call on the Commission to interfere in this in any way.”

Mr Agnew pointed out that in his farming lifetime he had seen wheat and sugar beet yields triple. “All of that is down to the efforts of the plant breeders and they have to be rewarded for the work they do.” His view is that the system works well in the UK and should be left alone.
