A prison has been forced to repay thousands of pounds to inmates – because they have overcharged them for the luxury of watching TV in their cells. Prisoners who have in-cell television are supposed to pay £1 a week but those is shared cells can split the cost. However a blunder at HMP Liverpool meant 1,400 inmates were each charged the full fee regardless of whether they shared a cell.
The Ministry of Justice has now had to pay £9,580 back in a move that is likely to infuriate the criminals' victims.
