About South East

The UK Independence Party is committed to withdrawing Britain from the European Union. We are a non-sectarian, non-racist, party that believes in a Europe of cooperating independent nations and not the undemocratic political union of the EU.

UKIP would replace Britain's membership of the European Union with the kind of agreements on free trade and co-operation that we thought we had signed up to when we first joined what was then called the European Economic Community.

2009 Elections

In the South East we increased our total votes from 2004 and returned 2 MEPs - UKIP Leader, Nigel Farage, and Marta Andreasen, the former chief accountant to the European Commission who was sacked for blowing the whistle on dodgy accounting practises and refusing the sign off the accounts.

Against a backdrop of lower turnout, and a boost for smaller parties across the board, we managed to increase our vote share nationally to 16.5%, and take second place behind the Conservatives, head of Labour and the Lib-Dems.

We returned 13 MEPs, an increase on 2004, amid a reduction in the total number of UK seats in the European Parliament from 78 to 72. UKIP now represent 18% of UK seats compared to 15.3% in 2004.
