William Dartmouth, an elected Euro MP and the 10th Earl of Dartmouth, UKIP's Deputy Chairman who previously sat in the House of Lords, has said that the time has now come for the Lords to be abolished in its current form.
William Dartmouth MEP said, "Following their vote last night it is clear that the House of Lords are intent on betraying almost 1 million British citizens now resident in the 27 other Member States of the European Union.
"This is not right. As a former member of the House of Lords I must state that this a shameful episode in the Houses' 900 year old history.
"The time has come for Lords to go and I would earnestly ask that their Noble Peers respect their 900 year old history and go with good grace and dignity, something which sadly has been lacking in the last 48 hours.
"During its deliberations many Peers spoke who have financial interest in the EU, something that was not declared during the debate.
"The way forward is for an elected second chamber based on regional proportional representation."
