Britain a prisoner of EU interference
Wednesday, 10th February 2010
Convicted criminals in Britain could shape the future of our democracy thanks to EU interference, UKIP MEP Mike Nattrass said this week.
Politicians in Westminster have been warned the Government must comply with a 2005 European legal ruling giving tens of thousands of prisoners the right to vote at the forthcoming General Election.
The UK is one of only a handful of countries in the world to impose a ban on prisoners voting but Britain could be pushed into lifting this ban by the European Union. But, commenting on the ongoing saga Mr Nattrass said Britain should be free to make its own laws and decisions and not be dictated to by the EU.
“Again this is a clear example of EU interference in our affairs,” said the UKIP MEP.
“The EU goes on about civil and human rights. What about our right to make our own laws, legislation and decisions?
“We are continually being told what to be do by the EU which wants to destroy individual countries’ sovereignty and create a European superstate.
“Those who have surrendered their right to take part in a free and open society, namely convicted criminals, have forfeited their right to vote as they have chosen to act against the law abiding majority,” he added.
The Taxpayers Alliance has called on the Government to stand up to the EU and defend Britain’s interests by refusing to do what the European Court of Human Rights says on this issue
