Immigration: sensible controls or free for all?

There is much confusion in the minds of those with only a loose grasp on basic economics on the advantages of immigration.  This of course includes most main stream politicians who are usually lawyers or erstwhile bureaucrats and indeed professional politicians of whom we have far too many.

In order for an economy to benefit from immigration the host country needs only those skills or labour which cannot be home grown.

There is much merit in having temporary workers to fill the gaps for seasonal harvest in rural areas, for example picking strawberries, sprouts, cherries and apples.  Kent in years past received and welcomed Londoners in their thousands for the annual hop picking season.  Where there are skill shortages, immigrants are as welcome as the flowers in spring.  Dentists, plumbers and joiners over recent years have in many areas of Great Britain literally saved the day
